How To Become A Makeup Artist ~Professional Training Vs Self Training

I hit upon the subject of professional training to become a makeup artist in this post (aimed towards having a career in media makeup) but I have so many thoughts on the topic of self-teaching vs paying for a professional course that I thought I would turn it into a little series of posts. As usual, I have had a lot of coffee so I’m expecting achy fingers by the end of this post. Grab a cuppa!

Makeup artistry has blown up in the past few years and continues to do so with the likes of Instagram, YouTube and Pinterest making it look like a full on glamorous career. And it can be really confusing to know which direction to take when wanting to get into the industry. There is no rule that a makeup artist has to have formal qualifications to work. But do they help? Or can you self-train and get by just fine?

I feel that I have done it both ways. I spent a fortune on a Media makeup, hair, fashion styling and prosthetics course. Also spent approx 267,000 hours watching tutorials on YouTube where I have learned a lot. And so I have come up with a list of pros and cons for each way of going about it.

Professional Makeup Artist Training Pros And Cons

Pro#1

Having constant access to professional working artists- Again I can only go on my own experience (I’m presuming all pro training academies work in pretty much the same way.) My tutors had worked in pretty much every area of the industry from Hollywood blockbuster movies to doing regular bridal work and everything in between. Having tutors that have years of experience in the industry is a fabulous thing. While training you are able and encouraged to ask questions that help to build up a picture of what having a career as a makeup artist is really like. As well as getting advice about everything else from how to book jobs, kit essentials, and professional technical advice on using certain products safely etc. (I personally enjoyed hearing stories about which celebrities were twats!) It is nearly ten years since I finished my course and I know that I could send them a message or go back to the school if ever I needed any help. That, I think is invaluable.

Pro#2

Building a circle of like-minded friends and work mates. Again I’m calling this invaluable. The people that I met on my course are still my friends all these years later. Some are in the industry and others are pursuing other careers now. But having those girls as work mates immediately after the course ended was wonderful. Myself and one of the girls got our first job with the same production company and ended up working on about 5 jobs together with them. It took the nerves down a notch having a mate with you. The road trips, the dodgy hotels,  not to mention the actual jobs that we did, are some of my most treasured memories.

Pro#3~ A foot in the door. As I mentioned, Private makeup schools have tutors with years of experience within the industry and they have built up a good reputation. A catch 22 when starting out is that you begin with no reputation. Without trying to be crass, by attending a course and gaining a qualification you will have a bit of a head start as you have trained under well-respected artists.

Pro #3

Hands on experience. Makeup Courses will make sure that you leave the school with a portfolio. So you will take part in several photo shoots with professional models where you will be able to do all kinds of makeup looks to give your finished book diversity. Some of our tutors even took us out on jobs while training. A few girls helped out on the Iceland adverts that ran in between “I’m a celebrity get me out of here.” Myself and a couple of girls got to help make prosthetics for “Casualty 1909” and go on set at the BBC. And another one of my classmates got a job as the assistant makeup artist on the same job.

Con #1

Extortionate costs- My course, in particular, was £16,000, in other words, a house deposit. Also factor in travel costs and possibly accommodation depending on how far you would need to travel (one of the girls on my course came from Hawaii to do the 4-month course in Manchester!) I’d like to add that I am in no way rich and I spent inheritance money on my course.

Con #2

Time away from home. This may or may not be an issue to a lot of people. For me, as a mother and a bit of a homebody, I thought that I would add it in, mainly because I’m struggling to think of cons! I personally had no issue with this as I drove the 2-hour round trip every day. I do like a good drive! But as mentioned above, if the course that you are interested in is far away from where you live then you may need to spend an extended period of time away from home.

Self-training pros and cons.

Pro #1

Nowadays we have in depth information on every subject at our fingertips, 24/7. It still blows my mind sometimes! From You Tube to blogs and not forgetting the humble physical book. Knowledge is easily gained anywhere at anytime. My personal favourite learning tool when it comes to makeup is YouTube. God knows how many highly successful, professional makeup artists have channel’s now! My personal favourite among them is Wayne Goss who I believe is, or was initially self taught. I have learned a lot from him over the years. No bullshit, wicked sense of humour and very inspiring! I bloody love that man! Eve Pearl is another (again, I believe self-taught) artist who I find hugely inspiring! Whenever I’ve had a wobble with confidence in the past I watch this video and feel incredibly inspired and ready to jump back into it.

Pro#2

There is minimal expense in being self-taught. Flick on your laptop, read a book, go to seminars and trade shows, join makeup artist forums, offer local artists your assistance and just generally take in information from anywhere you can. As long as you are passionate, dedicated and hard working you will go far!

con#1

Building a kit, initially, this may be more difficult. As most companies that offer pro discount require proof of qualifications, call sheets etc. Getting the invaluable pro discounts will prove harder if you are solely self-taught. Of course, you can 100 percent get by on the basics while you are building up a client base, and in all honesty getting by on the basics alone is a great learning curve.

con #2

A similar con to the one above. But without a formal qualification, I believe it can be more difficult to get makeup artist insurance.

So overall there really is no set in stone way of becoming a makeup artist. I think if you want to go down the private training route or even a local college course to gain a qualification and your personal finances and circumstances allow, then I would highly recommend it for the list of pro’s above. If your circumstances won’t allow it then there is absolutely no reason why you can’t use the many resources available nowadays to learn makeup application and get an insight into how the industry works. Build a kit, get a Facebook page, hand out business cards and get started. Work experience is where you will learn the most anyway so why wait?

I do hope this post is helpful to anybody that is hoping to become a makeup artist. And I hope I haven’t missed anything important out. Please do leave any of your own tips and advice in the comments.

Vlog Post 1~ Finn Turned 2! 7

Vlog Post 1~ Finn Turned 2!

Secretly I would love to be a vlogger. It just looks like a lot of fun! I have even given it a go in the past. But I feel extremely self-conscious talking to a camera. So, unfortunatley, I don’t think it’s really my bag.

A few weeks ago I borrowed my Dad’s DSLR and have been enjoying  (slowly) learning my way around it. Because of this, I have been taking more photos than I normally would. And I decided to combine my desire to vlog with the extra images on here to create a weekly vlog in pictures. Essentially a “week in the life” post.

Edit~ I realise vlog means video blog. But somehow I typed out this whole post, made a featured image, and published without it occurring to me that what I was writing made no sense. Can I still claim to have baby brain??

It was Finn’s 2nd Birthday last Saturday! And while I feel like he has been here forever, on the other hand, it only seems two minutes ago since I held that beautiful little, squishy bundle for the first time and fell head over heels in love with the third boy in my life.

Against what I thought was my better judgement we decided to hold his birthday party at our house. Initially, I was unsure about this. Well, you hear horror stories, don’t you? In my neurotic mind, Toddlers + sugar + e-numbers =Armageddon. But it turned out to be such a fun day. In fact, I would happily do it all again next week!

So my first “vlog post” doesn’t happen to be a full week. My MacBook died on Sunday morning and all of the photos that I took last week are on it. (I have to learn to backup!!)  Fortunately, I hadn’t erased my memory card with Finn’s Birthday pictures on.

If you can’t have party rings for breakfast on your 2nd birthday then I don’t know when you can! Just don’t tell the parenting police!

The ball pool that we hired for the day was a huge hit!

We ordered all of Finns present’s from Amazon. I was shocked to find out that Bob didn’t have an Amazon account. He does now! We took full advantage of the free Amazon Prime 30 day trial to ensure everything was delivered on time.

Finn Turned 2! 3

The party was supposed to have an “In the night garden” theme. It kind of ended up being a mish mash of that, plus a dinosaur waterpark.

How I Overcame Anxiety & Low Self Esteem 1

How I Overcame Low Self-Esteem & Anxiety

Just one thing before I start.

The title is not clickbait. However, as I have sat down to type this I have a flutter of anxiety in my stomach. I’m not worried about it. It’s naturally going to be hard to put out into the world your innermost thoughts and feelings. Let alone a lifelong struggle with a mental illness (Wow, that was really hard to type!) Well it’s either that or the 3 coffee’s I have drunk on an empty stomach (I should know better!)…

An educated guess would tell me that if you are here you are struggling right now or have struggled with anxiety in the past.

I wanted to write this post to sit alongside the many others that are (thankfully!) out there nowadays.

As everybody has a different story, I wanted to tell mine. In the hopes that anybody who is or has gone through a similar thing will relate and feel better by reading it.

I don’t really want to write a long rambly post. So I am going to try and break it down.

My Backstory…

The earliest memory of anxiety that I have is from when I was around 5/6 years old~ I was in the car with my parents and as My Dad turned the car into our street I noticed that the man in the car behind us was looking at where we were going. In reality, my Dad could have been driving like a prick or something along those lines. But in my mind, the man was checking out where we were going. And he was going to come to our house that night and kill us all! I remember lying in bed, terrified, that night waiting for the “killer” to bust down our door and murder my family. Mental right?

Obviously, that bought of anxiety stems from my overactive imagination and there’s probably no cure for that. 🙂

So that was the most extreme childhood memory of anxiety I have. I have a couple of other quite crazy ones. Looking back though, they do all stem from having an overactive imagination #babydramaqueen. As I grew up I remained a worrier but I don’t recall having any major anxiety. I was probably too busy focusing on makeup and boys.

How I Overcame Anxiety & Low Self Esteem 2

When I was 21 I had my first panic attack. Like before, I remember it very vividly. It was fathers day and I was lying on the settee watching “My Father the Hero” and I also had a terrible hangover (the worst trigger for anxiety, I now know.)

All of a sudden I had an overwhelming sense that I was about to drop dead. I had never experienced such a terrifying feeling in my life. If you have ever had a panic attack you will know the drill. Cold sweats, dizziness, heart racing, breathlessness. Horrendous. And when you have never even heard of a panic attack like I hadn’t at the time, the fear is off the scale.

After that first panic attack, I spiralled into anxiety. My Mum who had experienced anxiety/panic attacks herself when she was younger, was a fantastic support. But even her 24/7 advice and help couldn’t stop what was happening to me.

I would have attacks pretty randomly. In the supermarket, in the street, at work and I felt like I had no warning when they were coming. Looking back I can pinpoint why and how each one came about. I can even laugh at a lot of them.

I know it’s no laughing matter on the grand scale!! But listen to this corker….

I was going on holiday with my ex-partner and our son. On the way to the airport, I was sat in the back of the car (why am I always anxious in the back of a car??) when I felt a very small pain in my leg. “Overactive Annie” here thinks she has a blood clot and that she can’t go on holiday because the flight will kill her.

On arrival at Manchester airport, I announced to my then partner that our fortnight in Greece was not going to happen, I couldn’t go, I had a blood clot, therefore, I would die on the plane!!

After I was talked approx 25% down from the ledge, I decided that the only way I could fly would be if I had a support stocking (for my “clot”) so I purchased one from Boots, adorned my right leg with its glamorous new accessory, and was ready to go.

Or so I thought. Upon take off, my stomach duly flipped and my anxious mind took that to mean that part of “the clot” had dislodged and was travelling to my lung.

Long story short, I spent the remainder of the flight (where 75% of the passengers were guests at our hotel for the next 2 weeks) at the front of the plane breathing into a paper bag. I then asked the air hostess if she could find out whether there was a doctor on board the flight. (Which she did, over the tannoy!) “Luckily” there was a doctor, who checked my leg out and assured me that I did not have a blood clot. The end. Sort of…I panicked about everything on that holiday and spent half of it on the phone to my Mum and ex-Mother-in-law.

That holiday was, weirdly, also one of the best I’ve ever had~ So fuck you anxiety!

How I Overcame Anxiety & Low Self Esteem 4

So my non-rambly post isn’t really working out. I’m going to try and cut to the chase now.

Over the 11 years that I have suffered,  I have seen 3 private therapists, also a hypnotherapist, and I have been prescribed all kinds of medication, only some of which I have taken (I now take nothing.) In their own way, they, plus hearing friends and family’s stories, as well as being able to access other’s experiences online (now that the stigma thankfully seems to be reducing more and more) have all helped me out. I suppose it’s like anything in life, the more experience you have of something, the better you are at dealing with it.

So to get back to the point, the title of this post and the reason 99 percent of you have scrolled past my ridiculous stories.

About 4-5 months ago anxiety started creeping back up on me again. So I went to the doctor and was referred for counselling on the NHS.

I think a lot of overcoming anxiety through therapy is the connection you have with your therapist. As I mentioned above I also had some private treatment (which did help) but looking back I don’t feel that those therapists “got me.” The therapist I saw recently did! She didn’t delve into my past and blame my (perfectly normal, happy) childhood for my “problems.” She just let me talk. And she listened, and most importantly, I felt she really understood what I was saying at all times. I actually think she understood me better than I understood myself.

After only 4 sessions with her, I can honestly say I have never felt better and more in control of my life. Before, I was beating myself up on a daily basis about every tiny detail of my day to day life. I was never (fortunately) suicidal but I had a constant narrative in my head telling me how useless I was at everything I did. If I spoke in a group that voice was there telling me to shut up and that no one cared what I had to say. Facing each day was my biggest chore! I can’t believe that I lived like that for such a long time.

How I Overcame Anxiety & Low Self Esteem 8

The 3 simple techniques that I firmly believe put an end to that are…

1.”The parrot.”

My therapist told me that as soon as I heard that berating voice, I should imagine that it was a parrot in a cage, and to simply throw a towel over its cage to shut it up.

This sounds incredibly simple and it is! I believe its simplicity is what makes it great. And for me, it was powerfully effective immediately. If you have the same irritating problem of beating yourself up over everything then please try this technique. It quickly becomes second nature. Amazing!!

2.”The Department Store.”

This is another technique involving using the imagination and envisioning yourself in a multi-level dept store. Imagine you have visited the ground level previously and every time that you return to the store you head straight for that same level. You look around but you have obviously seen everything and it’s all boring. Why wouldn’t you go up and explore the other levels? I’m not sure I’m explaining this one too well. I hope you get what I mean.

The point is that there is no sense repeating the same thing over and expecting a different result (Einstein knew!)

Like I said before, she definitely got me, she had my love of shopping sussed!! I just imagine that the “ground floor” is full of crappy clearance makeup. And the “top floor” is floor to ceiling Tom Ford (with 75% off!)

3.”Do what makes you happy.”

This is a phrase that is thrown around a lot (Alfie Deyes anyone? I know I’m 32!! 🙈)

But sometimes doing what makes you happy doesn’t come easy. For me, doing what made me happy, in my mind, also made me selfish. It is not selfish to be happy!! You have every right!! And everyone around you will benefit from you being a happy person who enjoys their life. So quite the opposite of selfish. Go and do something for yourself today. And keep doing it.

How I Overcame Anxiety & Low Self Esteem 5

So that’s it. It’s been around 2-3 months since I stopped seeing my therapist now. She has assured me that I can go and see her if ever I need to. Which is very comforting! She also told me that she believes I won’t have to, which is even better. I believe that too. But who know’s? For now, I feel fantastic! And I am very grateful for the NHS!

I really hope above all that this post will help anybody that is having a hard time with anxiety or low self-esteem. And that it can put a light at the end of the tunnel.

Please feel free to comment your own experiences/tips in the comments!
